Betty Jane Smith left her earthly home at Tamarack Assisted Living in Altus, Oklahoma, on August 1, 2016, and entered into the arms of Jesus. Betty was born January 5, 1928 in Elk City, Oklahoma to F.M. and Ocie Cora (Shirley) Williams. She graduated from Canute High School in 1945 and married Gene Hall on March 28, 1948 in Anadarko, Oklahoma. To that union was born three daughters: Marilyn, Lois, and Karen. Gene and Betty owned Hall’s Furniture in Blair, OK. After 18 years of marriage Gene passed away on January 10, 1966. Betty married Clyde Vermillion on October 15, 1967, and gained a son Kieffer and daughter Naomi. Betty and Clyde moved back to Elk City to look after Betty’s mother. After 28 years of marriage to Clyde, he passed away July 7, 1995. On May 24, 1998, Betty married Cecil Smith. They enjoyed 11 years of travelling and spending time visiting family before his passing on January 20, 2009. “Granny Betty”, as most knew her, loved her babies. Time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grands was the joy of her life. She also loved the Lord and faithfully served and supported her church. Betty accepted Christ as her Savior at age 11. She spent time daily reading her Bible and shared Jesus at every opportunity. She was a skilled salesperson and an accomplished interior decorator who knew her trade. Betty was also a gifted artist who loved to paint, and she created many masterpieces for her children and grandchildren. She was also a gifted pianist and could play her favorite hymns by ear. Betty never met a stranger and had a multitude of friends across southwest Oklahoma, many of whom called her “Granny Betty” or “Mom”.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and also by her first husband Gene Martin Hall, her second husband Clyde D. Vermillion, and her third husband Cecil D. Smith. Two brothers, three sisters, a son-in-law Timothy Womack, and a great-granddaughter Alyssa Wiles also preceded her death.
She is survived by her children: Mike and Marilyn Thomas of Yukon, OK; Dale and Lois Degan of Altus, OK; Karen Womack of Katy, TX; Kieffer and Brenda Vermillion of Aledo, TX; Willie and Naomi Wiles of Wylie, TX; Rod and Kristina Smith of Phoenix, AZ; and Kay Bridgewater of Seattle, WA.
