Billy Joe McClearen, 97, Altus, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at The Courtyard at Magnolia Creek. Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at the Altus City Cemetery with Johnny Reimer officiating. The family will greet friends at 1313 Andy Street immediately following graveside services. Arrangements are under the care of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Billy Joe McClearen was born on May 10, 1925 in Altus, Oklahoma to Joe and Bessie (Earles) McClearen. He attended Altus and Lawton schools and graduated from Lawton Highschool with the Class of 1943. He entered the United States Navy Reserve in 1943 and served during WWII before his honorable discharge in 1946. Billy Joe obtained a Civil Engineering degree from Louisiana Tech in 1949, later moving to Fort Worth, Texas to work for the Corps of Engineers. He met the love of his life, Margaret Carrizales, in Fort Worth, and they married there on February 14, 1953; honeymooning in Mexico City. Billy Joe returned to Altus in 1956 working as a Civil Engineer. He worked on Altus Air Force Base from 1958 – 1985 and began his entrepreneurship with the Altus Bowling Center that he owned and managed from 1960 – 1972. In 1973 he started Altus Mini Storage, later adding two car washes. Billy Joe was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Altus, where he served as an usher and worked the sound system. He was active with Habitat for Humanity and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Whether by car, bus, boat or plane, he and Margaret loved traveling. They traveled all around the US, including Hawaii and Alaska, and Europe, always with each other.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to honor Billy Joe’s memory are his wife, Margaret; son, Jesse “Joe” McClearen and wife, Nikki; step grandson, Neal Powers and wife, Rachel; and many friends.
