Carol Jean Downs, 76, Altus, passed away Friday, October 27, 2017 in Oklahoma City at her daughter's home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Player officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.
Carol Jean Stewart was born February 17, 1941 in Lugert, Oklahoma to Andrew J. and Edna (Clark) Stewart. She graduated from Altus High School with the Class of 1959. Carol had worked as a seamstress at Kellwood's from 1969 until 1984. She then worked for the United States Postal Service in Miami, Texas and later in Childress, Texas where she retired in 1995. Carol enjoyed staying busy so she also worked part time as a Library Aid at Western Oklahoma State College until her decline in health. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women's Circle as well as other church functions. Carol was a member of the Jackson County Democratic Women's group and was active in an Altus local painting group. Every Saturday night from 1979 to 2000 Carol scored the races at Altus Speedway. Not only did she enjoy the races but that afforded her the opportunity to watch her sons race as well. She also volunteered at the Altus Department of Corrections Work Center; driving them to church, planning activities and mentoring them. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and keeping a nice lawn. But she especially appreciated time spent with her family and friends.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, DeRoy Stewart. She is survived by her daughter, Susie Braddock; four sons, Freddy Mack Downs; Greg Downs and wife, Jinebel; Terry Downs and wife, Sandi; and Bradley Downs; six grandchildren, Ashleigh Downs, Andrew Downs, Tera Downs, Beth Braddock, Jon Downs and Joey Stover; a brother, Glen "PeeWee" Stewart; her two dogs, "Brodie" and "Charlie"; and many other extended family and friends.
