Claude “Lefty” Smith, 74, passed away at his daughter’s home in Altus early Monday morning, December 1, 2014. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 AM, Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Nathaniel Dash officiating. Burial with military honors will take place at 1:00 PM, Thursday, at the Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to Kincannon Funeral Home. “Lefty” was born on September 13, 1940 to Whiteford and Vada (Sanders) Smith in Hamlet, North Carolina. Lefty and Sandra Ethel Kohl were united in marriage November 27, 1961 in Baltimore, MD, and to this union four children were born. He was a grocer for twenty eight years and worked as a newspaper deliveryman for the Altus Times for twenty one years. He was of the Christian faith. Lefty was a great outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved watching his daughters play basketball and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; the children’s mother, Sandra Smith; four brothers, Whiteford “Son” Smith, Samuel, Richard and Martin Smith and a sister-in-law, Edna Smith. Lefty is survived by his special friend, Sandy Hawkins of Altus, OK; two daughters, Jennifer Birmingham and husband Herbie of Altus, OK, Amy Varnell and fiancé Richard Holmes of Altus, OK; two sons, Butch Smith and wife Lonnie of Watauga, TX; Wesley Smith and partner Mary Medrano of Altus, OK; eightteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Carrie Hodge and husband Clayton; Eula Smith; Louise Hollingsgworth, and husband Pete; Connie Cunningham and husband Douglas; Ann Woody and husband Larry; and one brother, Neal Smith, all of North Carolina. The Smith family will greet friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the Kincannon Gathering Room.
