Claudia “The Angel of Mercy” Nichols Spence, 66, of Altus passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2011 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00, Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Navajoe Cemetery with Alvin Funkhouser officiating. Services are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. Claudia Ann Nichols was born June 30, 1944 to Claude T. and Thelma I. (Cowger) Nichols at Altus, Oklahoma. She graduated from Altus High School and attended nursing school at Vernon Regional Junior College in Vernon, Texas obtaining her LPN license. She worked in home health for many years before starting to work at Jackson County Memorial Hospital and finally at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis. She was of the Baptist faith. Everyone who knew Claudia loved her. She enjoyed time spent camping; fishing; road trips; exploring the country; making candles; going to garage sales and helping others. She always put the need of others ahead of her own, and would do most anything for anyone. She is preceded in death by her father, Claude Nichols. Survivors include her mother, Thelma Nichols; one brother, Charles L. Nichols, SR, and his wife Hermine of Headrick, OK; two sisters, Donna McNamara and her husband John of Bettendorf, IA; and Judy Nichols of Lubbock, TX; one special uncle, Tommy Cowger of Garland, TX; as well as many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends all who loved her dearly. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in memory of Claudia to the American Cancer Society. The Nichols family will greet friends Thursday, February 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.at Kincannon Funeral Home.
