Dennis Lynn Gilbert, 51, Altus, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014 at his home after a 5 ½ year challenge with ALS. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Tom Bailey and Charles Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home. Dennis Lynn Gilbert was born on February 3, 1963 in Weatherford, Oklahoma to Lainial and Nelda (Powers) Gilbert. After living in Duke and Indiahoma, Oklahoma for short periods of time in his earlier years, he moved with his parents to Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, where he attended kindergarten through the sixth grade. He moved with his parents to Mangum, where he attended junior high and graduated from high school in 1981 with all 12 years perfect attendance. Dennis was very active in high school sports and earned All-Conference honors in baseball, basketball and football. He was chosen by the high school faculty as the All-Round Senior Boy. Dennis attended Western Oklahoma State College in Altus on a baseball and basketball scholarship for one year. He went on to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford before accepting positions at Surrey Hills and Quail Creek Golf Courses in Oklahoma City. After a few years, he became Maintenance Superintendent at the Greens Golf and Country Club of Oklahoma City for a few years before moving to Altus to be closer to family. While in Altus, Dennis enjoyed working at Johnny Roberts Dodge Dealership for a little over a year, before he was overcome with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He spent the last 3 ½ years of his life completely bedfast. Dennis was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents and several aunts and uncles on his dad’s side of the family. He leaves behind a son, Benjamin Keith and wife, Whitney, of Lenapah, OK; his father and mother, Lainial and Nelda Gilbert of Altus, OK; three brothers and their families, Terry Von and Hali Gilbert, Haven and Lanee of Altus, OK, Mike Todd and Cynthia Gilbert, Kennedy, Conley and Adlen of Tipton, OK, and Brad Ryan and Tara Gilbert, Jackson and Sabrina of Altus, OK; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and a large number of good friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Dennis’ name to the ALS Association Development Department, 1275 K Street, NW, Suite 250 Washington, DC 20005. Additional parking for the service is available behind the funeral home, Best Western to the South or Western Sizzlin’ to the North.
