Dolphus Arnold “D.A.” Sloan, 92, Altus, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2010 in the Altus City Cemetery with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Services are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. D. A. was born on March 13, 1918 in Headrick, Oklahoma to Frank and Winona (Simpson) Sloan. At a young age, his family moved to Blair, Oklahoma, where he graduated high school. D.A. started working in grocery stores and meat markets. He moved to Dallas and started working at the North American Factory. He served in the Merchant Marines and was a veteran of World War II. He then moved to Altus and opened up the White House Grocery and Market. He married Jean Mitchell on May 18, 1950 in Altus. They moved to Madera, California, where D.A. was in partnership with Don Konkol in the meat market. They worked together for many years and opened up a meat plant in Madera. D.A. spent many years taking fishing tours into the Northwestern Territories in Canada. After his retirement, he and Jean moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma for three years and then back to their hometown of Altus. D.A. was a member of the Elks Lodge #1918 in Madera, California. He was of the Baptist faith. The Sloans enjoyed their friends on Tuesday evenings for a meal and music gathering at the Warren Community Center. His parents and a brother, Herschel Sloan, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of the home, two nephews, Dwight and Kenneth Sloan, and a niece, Janice Stallman. The Sloan Family will greet friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kincannon Funeral Home.
