Edward Lee "Ed" Huey

Edward Lee Huey, age 88, passed away at his home on November 18, 2016. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Altus City Cemetery Centennial Memorial Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.
Edward was born to Dikey and Mary Huey, August 5, 1928, at Altus, Oklahoma. At an early age his family moved to Washita County near Bessie and he completed elementary school in Cordell, moving to Burns Flat in 1940 and graduating from Burns Flat High School in 1946. He served in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1949, serving with the 1806 AACS Group as Training and Operations NCO at Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, Florida, Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico and Albrook Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone. Edward graduated with a BS degree in 1952 from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and a Masters Degree in 1959. He married Lois Burden July 31, 1959 in Sayre, Oklahoma. He also completed post graduate work at the University of Oklahoma. He served as teacher, coach, principal and superintendent at Oakwood, Stafford, Bessie, Cooperton, Roosevelt and Hobart public schools.
He joined the State Department of Education in June, 1968 as Deputy Examiner, later serving as Area Supervisor for southwest Oklahoma. In 1987, he was promoted to Associate State Superintendent and by appointment of the State Board of Education he served as State Superintendent for the State of Oklahoma, retiring in 1990. He served 22 years in the State Department of Education for a total of 38 years in the education profession. In 1990, he was recognized and commended by the U.S. Secretary of Education for his leadership and contributions in providing education to disadvantaged children. After retirement, he served as adjunct professor in the college of education at Southwestern State University. He also served as Interim Superintendent for Hobart Public Schools in 1997.
Edward a/k/a “Eddie” a/k/a “Pop” enjoyed trout fishing, golfing, traveling, helping neighbors, and family get-togethers. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Altus, and the Oklahoma Education Association.
He was predeceased by his parents, one brother and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Lois; one brother and spouse, Jim and Nedra Huey; daughter and spouse, Debbie and Roy Nikkel; son, Pete Huey; son and spouse; Clark and Gina Huey; and daughter and spouse, Lois Ann (LA) and Forrest Ray; six grandchildren, Mike Nikkel, Micah Huey, Dikey Huey, Taylor Huey, Lexie Ray, and McKenna Ray; two great grandchildren Madison Nikkel and Mariah Ray; and many friends.
The Huey family will greet friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Kincannon Funeral Home. Online tributes may be made at kincannonfuneralhome.com
