Freda Gayle Thurmond, 77, of Elmer, Oklahoma passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2022. A Memorial Reception will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 4th at the Kincannon Funeral Home. Arrangements and cremation are under the care of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Freda Gayle Dollins was born on June 20, 1944 in Olustee, Oklahoma to Walter L. and Mamie E. (Donague) Dollins. She graduated from Southside School. Freda married her high school sweetheart, John Nelson Thurmond, on July 29, 1961 in Wellington, Texas. Freda was a writer with the Altus Times newspaper for many years. She later spent many long, hot summers on wheat harvest with John as the crew ‘cook’. Freda was a member of the Elmer Methodist Church. She enjoyed fishing, going to antique shops and garage sales, sitting on the porch with family and sharing old stories, pulling the arm of a casino machine, and most of all her family. ‘Nana’ loved her grandkids and great grandkids beyond anything!
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John; parents, Walter and Mamie; and sister Walden Dollins.
Freda is survived by her children, Misty Thurmond and Randy Thurmond; five grandchildren, Justin Henson, Jami Henson, Jenny Henson, Alexis Steimel and husband, Matt, and Erika Chacon and husband, Miguel; four great grandchildren, Bryson Chacon and Avery, Tara, and Wesley Steimel; and sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Keith Thurmond.
