Garland L. Waldroop, 74, formerly of Altus, died Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Minot, North Dakota. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Kincannon Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Navajoe Cemetery.
Garland Lee Roy Waldroop was born July 28, 1940 in Humphrey, Oklahoma to LeRoy and Betty (Kreder) Waldroop. He grew up on the family farm in Humphreys with his two sisters Mary and Gayla and younger brother Delbert. He graduated from Altus High School in 1958 and married Mary Kay Biles in Vernon, Texas. Garland began work at Woolworth’s Department Store in Altus and later became manager. The family moved to Guymon, Oklahoma where he was manager of the Gibson’s Store. He later worked for a pipeline company, Panhandle Eastern, also located in Guymon. The family moved back to Altus in 1969 when he started Waldroop Construction. He became a Star Buildings dealer in 1970 and won many National Top Seller Awards for Star. His construction projects spanned across the state, and eventually across the country. He built the Sooner International Raceway North of Altus in 1983. Garland retired and moved to Oklahoma City in 1989. He had recently moved to Williston, North Dakota to help his two sons, Lee and Bryan, in their construction business supporting the oil and gas industry. Garland was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a big race fan, enjoyed racing and restoring antique cars. He also liked all kinds of old cowboy and Western music.
Garland is preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Kelly Waldroop and Janie Luke; a grandson, Trey Waldroop; two brothers, Delbert and Stewart Waldroop; and a brother-in-law, Larry Stephenson.
Survivors include a daughter, Renee Martin of Blair, OK; two sons, Lee and Bryan Waldroop, both of Williston, ND; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Luke of Nashville, TN, Krystle Luke of Chicago, IL, Lex Martin of Oklahoma City, OK, Lindsey Martin of Norman, OK, Lane Martin of Denver, CO, Laura Emerson and husband, Nick, of Altus, OK, Amanda, Bryan and Garrett Waldroop, all of Altus, OK, Brayden Waldroop of Marlow, OK, and Kaia and Kaleb Waldroop, both of Canon City, CO; and two sisters, Mary Stephenson of Pryor, OK and Gayla Richardson and husband, Ronnie, of Altus, OK.
