George Moody Surles, 96, Altus, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2023 in the Altus City Cemetery. Burial is under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
George Moody Surles was born on February 21, 1927 in Dallas County, Texas to Jesse D. and Ella (Bennett) Surles. He attended school near Mesquite, Texas before enlisting in the United States Army in 1945. George married Billie June Hayhurst on December 19, 1947 in Vernon, Texas. They shared 56 years and 11 months together before her passing in 2004. George worked for the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority as a dam tender until his retirement in 1992. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to the casino.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Ella Surles; his wife, Billie June; two daughters, Amanda June Henning and Peggy Alyene Payne; two sons, George Moody Surles, Jr., and Franklin Louis Surles; great grandson, George Moody Surles, IV; three sisters and four brothers.
Those left to honor the memory of George is his daughter-in-law, Franka; eight grandchildren, Jerri Collins, Joe Henning, Keith Payne and wife, Tisha, Jyme Kinnard and husband, Monty, Tom Henning and wife, Amanda, George Moody Surles, III and wife, Kim, Mark Payne and wife, Shanna, and Peggy Day and husband, Michael; sixteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two sisters, Addie B. Scott and Jo Ann Walls; one brother, Earnest Ray Surles; and many friends.
