Guy M. Grimes, 65, Altus, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2020 at the Veterans Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Private family chapel services will be webcast 10 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2020 at Kincannon Funeral Home. A private family burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2020 at Fort Sill National Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Guy Mitchell Grimes was born May 3, 1954 at Stewart AFB, Smyrna, Tennessee to Ernest Lee and Joan "Jo" (Wimberley) Grimes. He graduated Altus High School, Altus, Oklahoma, with the Class of 1972. Guy and Joy Hunnicutt were united in marriage October 19, 1974 in Odessa, Texas. To this union 3 children were born. Guy stayed productive and busy in his teens managing 3 paper routes, landscaping in the summers, and started an Emergency Service Explorer Post which met at the north main fire station and was the first President. Guy attended Thomas Street Church of Christ and was currently attending Tamarack Road Church of Christ. He enlisted in the Marines in 1972 and was trained as a Marine Air Traffic GCA Radar Controller stationed at Yuma, Arizona. Following a medical issue, Guy was trained in a new MOS in 1975 called Field Telephone Wireman and was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California until his honorable discharge in 1976. Guy worked many years in a variety of jobs including sales and cooking positions. He had advanced to a sous chef, holding two jobs at a time for many years. He cooked at 24 hour restaurants to make 2 jobs possible. Guy attended DeVry Institute of Technology for an Electronics Engineering Technology Degree but had to quit after a medical issue interfered. He enjoyed cooking meals for family and guests, working on computers, gardening and helping folks in need. Guy was an active member of the American Legion Post 44, Altus, Oklahoma and temporary Commander of the Disabled American Veterans as a Judge Advocate Post 33, Altus, Oklahoma Officer. He also volunteered as a service officer filing claims for many veterans.
Guy is preceded in death by his father, Ernest Lee Grimes; father-in-law, Robert Buford Hunnicutt; and grandson, Keaton Rylan Brooks-Grimes.
He is survived by his mother, Jo Grimes; his wife, Joy Lucille Grimes; three sons, Jerry Edward and Bernice (Freeman) Grimes; William Michael and Shannon R. (Anderson) Grimes ; Richard Spencer and Sherri Kay (Dempsey) Grimes; eight grandchildren, Gavin Patrick Grimes, Kylie Raeann Grimes, Haden George Grimes, Kyrstin Nicole Grimes, Rebecca Anneliese Grimes, Kaylin Wetsel, Jorden Hare, and Lillian Page Grimes; five great grandchildren, Rhylyn Leatherbury, RemiKay Wetsel, Aiden James Clark, Weston Carter Grimes and Riven Joel Wetsel.
