Henry Edsel "Ed" Wiginton

Henry Edsel "Ed" Wiginton, 84, Altus went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, January 13, 2017, from complications of Parkinson’s. Memorial service at First Baptist Church in Altus will be held Wednesday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Keith Wiginton and Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Memorial services and a private family burial are under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home.

Henry Edsel Wiginton was born on June 9, 1932, in Friendship, Oklahoma, to Woodie O. and Julia B. (Savage) Wiginton. He grew up on the family farm in the Friendship area and graduated from Friendship High School in 1950. Edsel and his brothers were very active in school athletics. Edsel played basketball and baseball for Friendship and in 1948 he was the second baseman on the American Legion Baseball team that won the state championship. In 1950 he was named to the All State Baseball team. He was awarded a scholarship to play baseball for Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. Edsel married Peggy Vaniman in Altus in 1950 and to this union four children were born. Edsel played semi-pro baseball for two years. Edsel enjoyed playing golf with his brothers and friends. Edsel enjoyed all sports including baseball, basketball, golf, and tennis and especially the ones his grandchildren and great grandchildren played. If he wasn’t participating in sports or attending sporting events, he was listening to sports on the radio or watching them on TV. He worked for White’s Auto Stores in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, eventually opening his own furniture store in Kermit, Texas. In 1968, Edsel partnered with Ted Kincannon opening Capri Home Furnishings in Altus. In March 1974 he owned and operated Wiginton Furniture in Altus for 14 years, retiring in 1988. He was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club. During his years in the furniture business he and Peggy enjoyed many trips abroad and cruises to the Caribbean. Edsel had a strong Christian heritage. He was a faithful deacon, member of the intercessory prayer ministry, and faithful choir member for over fifty years at the First Baptist Church in Altus. He loved teaching Sunday School and Training Union and working with the bus ministry.

He was preceded in death by his parents Woodie and Julia Wiginton; father and mother in law, D.R. (Ray) and Betty Vaniman; brother, Bryce Wiginton and his wife, Jean; son-in-law, David Wayne Self; sister-in-law, La Moyne Wiginton; and brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Clara Vaniman.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of the home; son, Larry Wiginton and wife, Linda; three daughters, Donna Self; Sandra Ford and husband, Randy; and Janet Wagoner and husband, Mike; six grandchildren, Chad Edsel Wiginton and his wife Ericka; Jennifer Burrow and husband Dustin; Shane Thurman Gregg; Lee Dustin Gregg and wife Allison of Burkburnett, TX; Dallas Owen Wiginton of Edmond; Braden Michael Wagoner and wife Kristen. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren, Kade Edsel Dean and Krosby Wiginton; Byke and Racer Burrow; Tristan Lee and Emma Gregg; Landree Jean Gregg; Kaden Ross and Emelyn West; brother, Keith Wiginton and wife, Linda; brother, Travis Wiginton; and many other relatives and friends.

The Wiginton family will greet friends Tuesday evening from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at Kincannon Funeral Home.
