Herbert A. Brannan, 88, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at his home in Altus. Funeral services with Masonic rites have been scheduled for 10:00 AM, Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Frank Bellizi and Bill Meeler officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home.
Herb Brannan was born August 11, 1927 to Thomas and Helen (Brown) Brannan in Moundsville, West Virginia. He attended and graduated from Moundsville High School in 1945, where he played football. Herbert entered the US Air Force on August 16, 1955. He flew over 8200 hours in the C-130 and C-47. He was stationed at Andrews AFB, Greenland, Travis AFB, Guam and McGuire AFB. He also served during the Vietnam War. He retired on September 30, 1982 with many decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two silver oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal with loop, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with 1 silver oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster and one bronze oak leaf cluster, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one silver oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster and one bronze oak leaf cluster. He married Shirley Moss on February 28, 1969 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Herbert was a lifetime member of the Air Force Sergeant's Association and the VFW, and was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Altus Masonic Lodge #62. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching OU and OSU football and the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he once attended a game when Jason Gildon played in the NFL. He was of the Baptist faith.
His parents and two brothers, Tommy and Roland, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home; four daughters, Donna Sienny of Moundsville, WV, Helene York of Paradise, CA, Sulinda Poorman of Simi Valley, CA and Christine Schriver of Layton, UT; four sons, Mike Bennett and wife, Lisa, and Melvin Bennett, all of Altus, OK, Barry Brannan and wife, Nancy, of North Branch, MI and Steve Brannan of Idaho; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren.
