Irene Mae Austin, 81, Altus, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 in Altus. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, February19, 2018 in the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bill Estep officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Irene Mae Mixon was born on November 6, 1936 in Hunter, Oklahoma to George W. and Mollie (Hickman) Mixon. She grew up in the Boswell, Oklahoma area and in 1949 the family moved to Mangum, where she attended City View School. Irene worked at the Hamburger Inn and the Tastee Freeze. She married Kenneth Ray Austin in Mangum on May 30, 1954. He passed away on October 25, 2015. In 1965, Kenneth and Irene moved to Altus. Irene worked at the Bus Stop Cafe, Larry's Restaurant, Base Bowling Alley cafeteria and the BX Main Exchange where she was employee of the year 3 years running. Irene also was manager at the Love's Country Store on Falcon Road. She worked for Altus Optical and Hearing Aid for 17 years before finally retiring. Irene was a member of the Altus Church of God and served in the nursing home ministry for over 20 years. She enjoyed singing, garage sales, arts, crafts, family reunions and especially doing anything her grandchildren wanted to do or participating in.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; a daughter, Patricia Newton; 3 sisters, Betty Tipton and husband, Jimmy. Joy Warren, Lavon Payne; a brother, Leon Mixon and wife, Beth; three brothers-in-law, Jerry, Donald and Eddie Austin; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Pauline and Alvin Austin.
Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Cone; son, Ray Austin; 7 grandchildren, Kenny Tuttle, Jennifer Meador and husband, Jason, Bobby Ray Austin and wife Jamie, Marion Scott and husband, Brad, Shawna Ketcher and husband, Sam, Kandi Vierra and husband, Roger, Jr., and Aaron Newton and wife, Vidisha; seven great grandchildren, Mayce, McCallay, Raylee, Adley, Gabe, Ian and Katie; a brother, Earl Mixon and wife, Bonnell; a brother-in-law, Butch Austin and wife, Bev; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 - 5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
