John P. Buck, 86, Mangum, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in Mangum, Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Mangum Church of Christ with Ken Hamilton officiating. Cremation has been provided by Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation service of Altus, Oklahoma.
John Porter Buck was born September 17, 1934 in Gunter, Texas to W. E. and Bertha (Wolfe) Buck. The family moved to Sherman, Texas in 1941 and to Altus in 1950, where John graduated with the Class of 1953. He attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma and graduated with the Class of 1957, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Education. While in college, John lettered all 4 years in football, basketball and track; was voted Best Male Collegiate Citizen 1956-1957; voted Outstanding Senior Boy; Student Council President his Senior year; All Conference Football Quarterback all 4 years; All American Quarterback; and was inducted into the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. John married Jane Clabaugh on December 20, 1957 in Mangum, Oklahoma. The couple then moved to Tipton, Oklahoma where John coached and taught from 1957 - 1959. He coached and taught at Elk City from 1959 – 1961; Mangum from 1961 – 1966; was Mangum Junior High Principal from 1966 – 1971; was Altus High School Principal from 1971 – 1977 and was Altus Public Schools Assistant Superintendent from 1977 until his retirement in 1991. He continued working part time at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford and at Southwest Technology Center in Altus until he retired in 1996. He married Janie Allen on March 28, 2009. John enjoyed spending time with family, gathering with friends, playing golf and watching Mangum Tiger sports.
John was preceded in death by his parents, W. E. and Bertha Buck; his wife, Jane; and two brothers, Billie Eugene Buck and Joe Buck; and sister-in-law, Gloria Buck.
He is survived by his wife, Janie, of Mangum; daughter, Susan Hepner and husband, Lyndon; son, Steven Buck and wife, Lisa; eight grandchildren, Lynsey Lee Janzen and husband, Andrew; Johnathan Grant Hepner and wife, Sara; Savannah Prock and husband, Daniel; Avery, Kinzey, Kirbey, Jeremiah and Isaiah Buck; seven great grandchildren, Eli, Owen and Caroline Janzen; Arnold and Poppy Hepner; Judah and Bentley Prock; two stepchildren, Sherri Weiwel and husband, Darin; Pam McCaw and husband, Richie; five step grandchildren, Drake and wife, Tabre; Jaxon McCaw; Anna Wiewel; and John Wiewel and wife, Erin; J’Lynn Crawford and husband, Keiton; two step great grandchildren Kix and Haizley; sister, Carmen Rooks and husband, Johnny; and many other relatives and friends.
