Joseph L. Glenn, Jr. , 75, Olustee, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2017 at his home. As per Mr. Glenn's wishes, his body was donated for research to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center with assistance from Kincannon Funeral Home. The Glenn family will host a Celebration of Life in Mr. Glenn's honor, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Olustee Community Church, 7th and "I" Streets in Olustee.
Joseph Luton (Sonny) Glenn, Jr. was born May 4, 1942 to Joseph L. and Lena (Harrison) Glenn in Lauderdale County, Tennessee. He graduated from Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee with the class of 1960. Joe joined the US Air Force in 1961, serving in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Osan Korea and South Carolina before his honorable discharge in 1966. While at Altus AFB, he met Sharon Drury and the two were married June 28, 1963, thus beginning a 54 year adventure. After his military service, they moved back to Memphis, Tennessee where he attended Memphis State University for one and a half years before going to work for the Cottonbelt Railway. Daughters Tamara and Janetta joined the family in 1978. While in Memphis, Joe enjoyed playing / coaching city league fast pitch/slow pitch/coed softball, basketball and volleyball. He was also involved with coaching in the Women's Nursing Basketball League for the University of Tennessee, Memphis School of Nursing. He enjoyed riding dirt bikes, water skiing, snow skiing, playing golf and traveling with family and friends. Joe retired in 1998 from what had become Union Pacific Railway following 33 years of service. That same year the family moved to the Olustee Y in Southwest Oklahoma where Joe became involved in raising black and red angus cattle. Using the track hoe, Joe cleared salt cedars from his land until his health intervened. He served on the boards of Jackson County Water and the SW Community Action.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Luton and Lena Glenn; his in-laws, Forrest and Lorayne Drury; his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Wendell Drury.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon, of the home; daughters, Tamara Glenn, TN; and Janetta (David) Ray, CO ; grandsons, who called him Papa Joe, Christian (Emily) Ray, CO; Michael Ray, GA; and Matthew (Kayla) Ray, KS; great grandson, Kylan Ray, CO; foreign exchange students who also called him Papa Joe were, Lisa Holler of Austria; Meen Taearak of Thailand; Madina Berkaliyeva of Kazakhstan; family member Brook Ray of GA; two sisters, Sharon (Ron) McNichols, IL; and Deborah (Tony) ) Loskoski, MS; nephew, Lee Daily, CA; and many other family and friends who can say Joe had touched their lives and that he will be greatly missed.
