Joseph Richard Towers, 76, passed away on March 18, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was a man of deep faith, unwavering dedication, and a heart for service, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and hard work.

Born on June 23, 1948, to Edwin Earl and Ruth Jeanette (Griswold) Towers, Joseph lived a life full of purpose and commitment to his family, country, and community. He proudly served as a Vietnam War veteran in 1969 and later became a Base Career Advisor in 1984. His service extended beyond the military as he worked as a dispatcher for the Altus Police Department and taught small engine repair, always eager to share his knowledge and skills with others.

On June 6, 1973, Joseph married the love of his life, Dorothy “DJ” Towers, in Elkton, Maryland. From the moment they met, he knew they were meant to be together, and their marriage was filled with love, adventure, and a shared passion for traveling across the country, coast to coast.

Joseph was a lifelong leader and mentor. He was an Eagle Scout and dedicated 52 years to working with the Boy Scouts. He was a life member of the Airforce SGTS Association, a Mason of the 32nd Degree, and a life member of the VFW. He was also an AARP Safety Driving instructor in Southwest Oklahoma, for the last nine years, always seeking to help others become better and safer on the road. Joseph loved to help people and did lots of volunteer work. He loved to fix things. His meticulous attention to detail and willingness to help made him a trusted and respected figure in every community he was part of.

Faith played an essential role in Joseph’s life, and he was always willing to serve the Lord in any way. He was a member of the Gutherie Knights of Saint Andrew and a devoted 9th-grade Sunday School teacher at Altus First Baptist Church. He lived by his belief that if the Lord asked, he would do anything.

Joseph loved people and never met a stranger. Whether he was teaching others how to drive a bus, working with his hands, or simply sharing stories, his kind and giving spirit touched the lives of everyone he met. He was known for his generosity, always doing anything he could for a friend. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Ruth Towers; and brother, Kenny Towers. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 52 years, DJ; sister; Elaine Thomas; as well as many friends.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 27th. Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, March 28th in the Kincannon Memorial Chapel. Burial will immediately follow at the Altus City Cemetery with full Air Force Honors rendered by the Blue Knights Honor Guard.
