LaVerne A. Scoggin, 97, Altus, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. A homegoing celebration will be 2:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Broughton officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home.
LaVerne A. Scoggin was born on July 20, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois to Lelia Alexander. She was raised by her uncle, Edgar Burrell and his wife, Nell, at an early age. In November of 1947, she married Claude E. Scoggin. To this union, three children were born, Beverly, Ruth and Claudette. She worked as a cosmetologist all of her adult life, as well as a domestic worker. LaVerne was a faithful member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church since 1948 and was very active in various church activities. She loved to garden and send cards to people.
Her parents, husband, a daughter, Ruth Scoggin, her uncle and aunt, Edgar and Nell Burrell, and a nephew, William F. "Bill" Williams, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Lemon and Claudette Bowen and husband, Alexander; three grandchildren, Trevor Bowen, LaVerne Alexandra Bowen and Courtney Lemon and family; her sister, Delores Seller and family; a cousin, Carolyn White; two nieces, Antoinette Sellers and Ghita Williams; and many friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
