Mabel Adilin Tabor, 96, passed away at home on Thursday, November 23, 2023 north of Altus, Oklahoma. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, December 2, 2023 at the Mobeetie Cemetery, Mobeetie, Texas under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Mabel Adilin Shiflett was born to Almurta (Ross) and Riley Francis “R.F.” Shiflett on January 19, 1927, in Porter, Oklahoma. She was the third of their ten children.
Mabel graduated from Goodwell (Oklahoma) High School and continued her education thereafter earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. She started her working career as an Oklahoma farm extension agent in the 1940s. In 1947, at the age of 20 she married John Barnes. Mabel and John had one son, Johnie Lee Barnes. On October 19, 1959, Mabel married Earl Nebraska Tabor and they made their home at the Tabor farm in Buffalo, Oklahoma. Mabel and Earl had four children, Johnie (Barnes), Cindy, Janita, and Samuel.
Mabel’s passions were her children, grandchildren, growing plants of all kinds, and all kinds of baby animals! Mabel was a dedicated schoolteacher for over 50 years living in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. She moved to Mobeetie, Texas in the early 1980s. She was a teacher, farmer, gardener, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. In 2019, Mabel moved into a tiny home on her daughter Cindy’s farm in Altus. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ.
Mabel is survived by her 2 daughters, Cindy Bailey (Tom) of Altus, OK and Janita Taylor of Sherman, TX; son, Samuel Tabor (Sonya) of Forks, WA; 3 sisters, Berdine Rawlins, Emma Schultz, and Lucy McKnight; 2 brothers, Curtis Shiflett and Don Shiflett; 19 grandchildren, Samantha, Bradley, Brandy, Crystal, Nicole, Becky, Thomas, Crystal Marie, Tabitha, Charles, Katrina, Jonah, Shelby, Hannah, Naomi, Seth, Sara, Elijah, and Anna; 30 great-grandchildren, Romi, Zoie, Daniel, Claire, Kehmar, Journey, Belami, Preston, Griffin, Caleb, Noah, Axel, Ember, Rowan, Matthew, Taylor, Austin, Rashawn, Heavenn, Narissa, EmanualCraig, Maitai, Zeke, Ezra, Kaden, Emory, Silas, Valen, Ruby, and Malachi; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Journe and Milo.
Mabel was preceded in death by parents, R.F. and Almurta Shiflett; husband, Earl; son, Johnie; son-in-law, Charles Taylor; grandson, Jason; brother, John Ross; and sisters, Ina, Alma, and Marjorie.
