Melvin D. Sherwood, 78, passed away, Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, OK. Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2011 at the First Assembly of God with Rev. Arlis Moon officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. Melvin was born on November 1, 1932 in Konawa, Oklahoma to Samuel and Edith (McBride) Sherwood. He attended school in Konawa, Oklahoma and graduated from the Southside School near Hess, Oklahoma in 1950. He entered the United States Navy on April 4, 1951. He was an electronics and communications specialist and was honorably discharged on March 29, 1955. Melvin was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He married Margaret Perry on August 31, 1957 in Altus, Oklahoma. Melvin started working for the City of Altus Electric Department in 1955. He worked for the City of Altus for 39 years and much of that time he was the Electric Department Superintendent. He was actively involved with the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma Board (MESO). He retired in 1994. He attended the First Assembly of God. Melvin was a lifetime member of the VFW and the I.O.O.F. (Oddfellows). He enjoyed fishing, telling jokes, puzzles, reading and westerns. He loved spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin sister, Dorothy Palmer, and a brother, J D Sherwood. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of the home; twin sons, Daniel Sherwood and wife, Lisa, of Durant, OK, and David Sherwood of Altus, OK; two sisters, Inez Mullens of Whitesboro, TX, and Ruby Plasterer of Mesa, AZ; a brother, Sam Sherwood and wife, Rosemary, of San Jose, CA; a sister-in-law, Faye Sherwood of Konawa, OK; two grandchildren, Terran and Chelsea Sherwood; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. The Sherwood Family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Kincannon Funeral Home.
