Sumiko S. Singletary, 85, Altus, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. The Singletary family will host a reception Sunday from 1 pm to 2 pm in the Kincannon Gathering Room. Cremation services have been entrusted to Kincannon Funeral Home.
Sumiko Umeda was born May 1, 1930 to Hichirou and Kisa (Tamura) Umeda in Shinden-Adachi-Ku, a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. After graduating high school she attended dressmaker school, flower arrangement school, Abacus school and Vo Tech Sewing Class. Sumiko and James R. Singletary were united in marriage on August 9, 1981 in Altus, Oklahoma. She worked as a seamstress at Kellwood Manufacturing in Altus, Frybrandt Manufacturing in Frederick and OK-1 Manufacturing in Altus. Sumiko was a Buddist and was instrumental in the establishment of the Soka-Gakai International (SGI) in Altus, Oklahoma. She received the Distinguished Pioneer of American Kisen-rufu Award in October of 2010 and many awards for productivity at OK-1and Kellwood. Sumiko loved to travel and visit with friends and family.
Sumiko is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Shoichi and a son, Albert Stepanovich. She is survived by her husband, James Singletary; a daughter, Katherine Burnett; a son, Joseph Stepanovich and wife Rhonda; stepchildren, James Singletary, Jr., Mary Cortez, Antonia Singletary, Harry Singletary and Kim Barnett, all of the Austin, Texas area; four grandchildren; Dana Young, Jessica Steoanovich, Amanda Thorley and husband Ryan, Blake Stepanovich and wife Morgan; and a great grandson, Beckett Thorley.
