Velma Kendall Doughty, 97, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct 1, 2014 in Bedford, Texas from natural causes. Graveside service will be 10:00 AM Monday, October 6, 2014 at the Altus City Cemetery with Rev. Margie Van Oostrum officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 – 9:45 AM Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home. She was born on January 26, 1917 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Martin Kendall and Clemmie Strong. Velma was one of four daughters who grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She worked in a bank in Shawnee where she later met and married Harold Doughty in August of 1941. During World War II, Harold served in the Army Air Force. After the war, Harold and Velma moved from Shawnee to Altus, Oklahoma where they lived for almost sixty years. She was fortunate to be able to be a stay-at-home housewife and loving mother to their two sons, Steve and Paul. However, she also served as a volunteer at the local hospital and at the Child Protective Services. Harold and Velma were long-time members of First United Methodist Church of Altus. Mrs. Doughty was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Evelyn White, Irene Maravich and Mary Lou Herlacher, her beloved husband, Harold, and granddaughter, Shelby Doughty Wright. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Dianne Doughty of Bedford, Texas and son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jane Doughty of Edmond, Oklahoma; four grandchildren: Gary and Cara Doughty of Houston, Texas; Mark and Lauren Doughty of Houston, Texas; Kendall Doughty of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Steve Wilson of Houston, Texas; six great-grandchildren: Ryan Doughty, Nora Doughty and Landon Doughty, Blake Doughty and Josh Doughty, all of Houston, Texas and Braydan Woods of Altus, Oklahoma.
