Vereda Maurine Knight, 84, Altus, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at her home. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, July 28, 2014 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Dr. Mark Haught officiating. Burial will follow in the Hess Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home. Vereda Maurine Butler was born on June 10, 1930 in Elmer, Oklahoma to Leroy “Dee” and Vesta Mae (Woolley) Butler. Her entire life was spent in Jackson County. She graduated from the Southside School in 1948. Vereda married Grover Knight on January 9, 1955 at the Elmer United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for thirty years before retiring. Vereda was a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed attending country music gatherings at senior citizens centers around the area. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Carroll D. Butler, a sister-in-law, Opal Ruth Butler, and a grandnephew, Bobby Butler. Survivors include her husband, Grover, of the home; a son, Grover Devon Knight of Oklahoma City, OK; two brothers, Coy L. Butler and wife, Jeanean, of Elmer, OK and Terry L. Butler and wife, Sammie, of Altus, OK; a sister-in-law, Betty Sue Morris of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Additional parking for the service is available behind the funeral home, Best Western to the South or Western Sizzlin’ to the North.
